Painting by David Simon
This view from the looks south-west over the hillfort towards the point where the River Earn flows into the Tay estuary. This is the largest and most imposing of the hillforts built in Ochils, which commands extensive views up and down the valley. From the summit a number of smaller hillforts are visible as well as the other great Strathearn hillfort, on Moncrieff Hill, the ridge in the middle distance.
For this reconstruction we have chosen to illustrate all of the round houses occupied at once and no domestic occupation in the central stone ‘citadel’. Whether the site was occupied all year round or just during the Summer grazing season is further matter for speculation.
